When the group that was to become the Strum Bums first met (back when the World Trade Center still stood in NYC) we were hosted by the Nevada County Senior Center at the Fair Grounds in Grass Valley. Retired cardiologist Dr. Norm Nomof was president of the Center and was one of the charter members of the group. In 2007 he moved to Modesto CA to be closer to his son’s family. He immediately went to the YMCA and said he wanted to start a ukulele group. He asked me to come give the initial workshop. Lorrie Freitas, a wonderful teacher and community organizer, stepped in to eventually lead the group which has a large membership and enjoys huge community respect.
